Pintia Spain June 1–29, July 3–31 and August 6–September 3, 2008 Buried CeltsJust over 1000 feet outside the Roman settlement of Pintia in northern central Spain sits the largely undisturbed Iron Age cemetery of Las Ruedas. Since 2004, archaeologists working at the site have discovered over 125 burials associated with the Vaccean culture, a Celtiberian people who occupied the region from the fifth century B.C. until the Roman conquest. The excellent preservation of many of the burials has brought to light an impressive assortment of grave goods from the Iron Age, including war implements and Celtic domestic goods. Over the past several seasons, director Carlos Sanz Mínguez has been working at the margins of the cemetery. This season, he and his team will begin excavating some of the unexplored areas in the center of the necropolis.
