July 24
Today we had the day off from digging. I was actually able to sleep in until 8:30am! They organized a trip to Jerusalem to the City of David. The buses left 10am. We ate lunch at a promenade that overlooked the Old City of Jerusalem. I felt bad for the few guys that were fasting and could not eat or drinking anything. It was really hot and I cannot imagine not being able to drink anything!
After we circled the old city a few times because most of the roads leading into the old city were closed for security. I guess there were too many people in the city because of the fast. We eventually found a place for the bus to drop us off and we walked across the Kidron Valley into the Old City. From there we were able to go into Hezekiah’s tunnel. This tunnel is around 600m long (at least I think) and had water on the floor to about the middle of my shins. It was so refreshing! The water flows from the Gihon Spring to the Siloam Pool.
