Today we moved pretty quickly and were able to make a lot of progress. It was very hot today, and I think it is supposed to be really hot all week (when is it not though?). The gate is actually closer than I thought it was, so if we work very hard during the next few days we might reach our goal! :)

Today we uncovered some more of the Roman wall and, of course, the street. We found an interesting place on the side of the street where there is bedrock on the surface. There is a large amount of natural rock there, and it looks really neat. We also found a stone that was used as a corner for a wall, which is very nicely decorated. It is smooth stone with layers that build on each other. We know it was used as part of the wall because only a section of it (the part that would be visible) was smooth and designed. The rest of it was unfinished.

This afternoon we washed pottery, which we do most afternoons. It is interesting to see what people are finding in other areas of the site. I heard today that one group found two coins in their place of excavation. That is always exciting. :) Tonight we have a lecture about the North West Church, which is being excavated by a group from Poland. There are a lot of mosaics in the church that the Polish team cleans and preserves. I am sure we will learn more about it this evening! :)

Today was a great beginning to our last week at the site.
