We are continuing to uncover the Decumanus Maximus. I think we are supposed to be at the gate by now, but finding the sidewalk distracted us, and we are uncovering a wider area now. We found some very nice Hellenistic stones that have been reused as pavement on the sidewalk. We also found a broken glass jar and some fragments of colored mosaic. I spend most of the time sweeping the street and shoveling dirt in front of the tractor. My muscles are becoming more accustomed to hard labor, so the work is getting easier. :)
Other groups are finding interesting objects as well. The group I was working with in the beginning (for the first two days) found pieces of a sculpture. It was two pieces that fit together to form three fingers clutching a rectangular object. Several groups found coins as well.
We had another pottery lecture yesterday. We were able to look at the different pots and jars that were put back together from pieces found at Hippos. It was very interesting. We also had a lecture yesterday on bones (cultural anthropology). It was interesting, especially since one site being excavated at Hippos is a burial ground.
We are making great progress, and we are excited about reaching the gate next week!
