Roman Holiday

This summer, join the American Institute for Roman Culture (AIRC) as they undertake their third season of excavation at the site of a Roman villa in the heart of ancient Rome. The luxurious second century A.D. Villa Vignacce, or “Villa of the Vineyards,” is thought to have built by Quintus Servilius Pudens, a wealthy friend of Emperor Hadrian. The two-story villa complex occupied five acres of ancient Rome’s southern suburbs. The site is now in the middle of one of Rome’s largest public parks, the Aqueduct Park.

The discoveries made by the AIRC include a magnificent marble and mosaic-filled bathhouse, complete with caldarium, fountain, latrine and changing area. This season, volunteers under the direction of archaeologists Darius Arya and Dora Cirone will continue the excavation of the bathhouse, while also learning about Roman history and modern archaeological practice.

Participants will live in shared apartments in central Rome.
