Roman Project Bulgaria July 1-September 15, 2008 Triple the Fun in Roman BulgariaVenture this summer to the scenic environs of northwestern Bulgaria in search of the vestiges of the ancient Roman Empire. The Bulgarian Archaeological Association offers volunteers the opportunity to excavate at three different archaeological sites in the region, all with extensive Roman-era remains. You can help uncover the ruins of Mazdra Kale, a massive Roman fortress with outer walls still standing to a height of over 20 feet! Then, overlooking the banks of the Archar River in Aniste, you can try your hand at excavating an expansive ancient villa and bath. Finally, why not take on a whole ancient town by digging at Colonia Ulpia Traiana Ratiaria, one of the largest Roman towns of the lower Danube and the administrative center of the Dacia Mediteranea province. The Roman Project Field School allows participants several training modules to choose from and only requires that volunteers stay a minimum of two weeks. In addition to receiving training in excavation methodology and Roman history and culture, volunteers will also participate in two new workshops on archaeological drawing and ceramic analysis. Participants will stay in a comfortable hotel in a town nearby to all three sites. Each shared double room includes a private bathroom and television. | Dig DirectorsKrassimira LukaSara Tatarova Geographic LocationVarious sites, Northwest BulgariaDates of OccupationRomanDates of the DigJuly 1-September 15, 2008Minimum Stay2 weeksApplication DueMay 15, 2008CostProject offers five modules; see website for detailsAcademic Credit/Cost per Credit/InstitutionNoAccommodationsHotel nearby sitesContactKrassimira Luka011-359-878-680524 info@archbg.net http://www.archaeology.archbg.net/ Open for toursYes, by appointment |
